In 2017, Cat 5 Hurricane Maria devastated the island of Dominica, taking 65 lives (in a population of less than 70K.) The beach, in the village of Salisbury where we grew up was destroyed by the flooding of the lagoon which brought massive amounts of silt and stones to the beach, and worsens every time it rains heavily (which on the “Nature Isle”, is often), eliminating the ability to receive tourists who the vendors, farmers, fishermen, and others in the village depended on for their livelihood.
